#MMMay16 – Week 4 in which there were cloudbursts

This is my last MMM post this year. I delayed posting the last week as I wanted to debut my new shirt in the Monthly Stitch New to me contest first.

The first few days were in the UK, but at the end of the week, I was on holiday. I was hoping to have improved weather in Italy so that I could wear more summery clothes. Alas, the weather was a bit too rainy with lots of cloudbursts and thunderstorms!

So, here are my final outfits for the month:

MMM - Collage wk4

Top row:

Checked classic shirt, Black trousers (RTW), Khaki t-shirt (RTW)

Monochrome paisley skirt, Black surplice top

Purple Sorbetto top, Helicopter jacket, Brown cardigan (RTW), Lilac 3/4 length trousers (RTW)

Wide-legged linen trousers, Brown paisley top, Brown cardigan (RTW)

Corduroy trousers, Brown cardigan (RTW), White embroidered top (RTW)

Bottom row:

Beige Wolfie trousers, Checked classic shirt, Green t-shirt (RTW)

Red Sorbetto top, Brown hoodie (RTW), Beige 3/4 length trousers (RTW)

Red Sorbetto top, Brown hoodie (RTW), Blue jeggings (RTW)

Beige Wolfie trousers, Orange/purple 3/4 sleeve top (RTW), turquoise hoodie (RTW)

Balloon top, Lilac 3/4 length trousers (RTW)

Like last year, I used a spreadsheet to record my outfits and do a little analysis on what I wore. I didn’t make any special effort to wear all my me-mades or not do repeats.  I just wore what I normally wear, which these days contains a fair percentage of me-makes.

*Hoodies / cardigans only worn on 24 days.

#For two days two tops were worn – t-shirt and checked shirt worn on top.

This year, I didn’t wear my one dress at all, but I did manage to wear skirts on 7 days (22.5%) which is about once a week. Strangely enough this was exactly the same as last year. Clearly, that is what I’m comfortable wearing and usually works out as 1 or 2 days of wearing a skirt at work. My activity levels at home mean that skirt wearing isn’t too practical.

Looking at my stats, I’m actually pleased that I have worn a me-made top virtually every day (26 days) and me-made bottoms roughly two-thirds of the time. I did wear some me-made outerwear, but I didn’t really include that in my statistics, perhaps I should? Perhaps I could even count underwear next year?

Now, time to talk to myself seriously. Cardigans. Yes, I acknowledge wearing cardigans which have holes in for a whopping 11 days in May. What is even more annoying is that these same cardigans had holes in last year too. I didn’t even get round to mending them. To quote myself from me-made-may 2015:

“There is one very obvious thing that leaps out of the statistics and that is that I do not own a single me-made cardigan………. Now I have the overlocker, I really must tackle some cardigan making.”

Sadly, I haven’t made a single one since last year! In the next year, I must make cardigans! And do you know what, the Monthly Stitch Swap Fairy granted me my wish and my swap included the Jenna cardigan from Muse. Thank you so much, swap partner! So, absolutely no excuses. I will not be exhibiting cardigans with holes in next year. No way!

Overall, I’m so glad I photo-recorded all my outfits. It was more effort and Mr and Master Steely, got seriously annoyed by my photography requests in May, but I can really see my outfit improvements compared to May last year.

Hope you enjoyed Me-Made-May this year? Did it turn up any surprising wardrobe gaps, or were you confronted by the blindingly obvious wardrobe omissions?

#MMMay16 – Week 3 in which my iron decided to die

We’re now three quarters through Me Made May. So far, I’ve managed to keep taking photographs, but this week I was hit with a mini-disaster. I have been busy making some items for Independent Pattern Month at The Monthly Stitch when my iron died. It just didn’t heat up when I turned it on. It was a bit frustrating as I really needed it for my next sewing step; sewing-related ironing always takes precedence over other sorts of ironing! Anyway, I decided, given the age of the iron, that a new purchase was necessary and I picked up this Morphy Richards Breeze iron in the shops.

Iron

Anyway, the iron is just my excuse for missing one day’s photography this week. I spent all of my lunch hour gazing at irons in a department store. Really, I had no idea that there was so much choice. Then the evening was spend trying out my “new toy”. So no pictures were taken, can I be forgiven?

Anyway, here is this week’s collage, with six photos, instead of seven!

MMM - Collage Wk3

Top Row:

Day 1 – Pink floaty top (unblogged), Brown 3/4 length trousers (RTW), Brown cardigan (RTW), Helicopter jacket

Day 2 – Pink floaty top (unblogged), Lilac 3/4 length trousers (RTW), Brown cardigan (RTW) – no photo

Day 3 – Blue patterned t-shirt ,  Brown cardigan (RTW), Wolfie Trousers, Helicopter jacket

Day 4 – Black shirt, Corduroy trousers, Black hoodie (RTW)

Bottom row:

Day 5 – Boho paisley top, Wolfie Trousers, Brown cardigan (RTW)

Day 6 – Red gothic shirt, Grey Moss Skirt, Black hoodie (RTW)

Day 7 – Black shirt, Monochrome skirt, Black hoodie (RTW)

The new iron has a ceramic base. I have found that my stainless steel-based iron tended to suffer with getting a “sticky” surface and this could really ruin the garment that I was ironing. I wonder if the ceramic base is an improvement? Does anyone else have something similar? So far the only thing I have noticed is that the iron suffers a little from static as I use it. Perhaps this is common with ceramic based irons.

#MMMay16 – Week 2

On Sunday Master Steely and I went for a cycle ride along the Avon and Kennet canal towpath. The weather was hot and we had a great pic-nic on route. Sadly, I don’t think I am in tip-top shape, as my legs felt like jelly the next day!

After Sunday, though, the rain returned and drove me to snapping only indoor photos and wearing thick tights. I’m noting that I’m also wearing the same disgraceful set of cardigans as last year – two with holes in and the other very floppy and faded. How did I manage to avoid putting cardigans at the top of my sewing list over the last twelve months?

#MMMay16 – Week 1 From Winter to Summer

This year I promised myself that I would keep a proper photographic record of Me Made May. I skimped on this last year, as it can be a drag to photograph each outfit. Unfortunately, for me the photography does require at least a trip to the park, unless I feel that photos of my lego-strewn living room posted on line are suddenly an aesthetic that appeals.

Putting together the collage for this week, I noticed that I started out the week in one of my heavy winter jumpers and ended up with just a light cardigan at the end of the week – the weather has changed dramatically.

Here’s what I’m wearing, from left to right, top row:

Day 1 – Linen trousers, Dark striped jumper (RTW)

Day 2 – Linen trousers, Dark striped jumper (RTW)

Day 3 – Grey Moss skirt, Black surplice top, Scarf (unblogged), Black cardigan (RTW)

Day 5 – Red gothic shirt, Hacking jacket, Blue jeggings (RTW)

Me-Made-May ’16 Pledge

me-made-may'16I did enter Me Made May 15 very much just in spirit last year. I had found that daily photos was a tricky task, but at the end of the month I felt I had some how missed out on the event. This year I’m going to make sure I document what I do. Plus looking back at my makes over the last year there are some favourites that I can add to the mix including my Peter and the Wolf trousers, the Hacking Jacket and my 3/4 sleeve t-shirt

I, Steely of https://steelyseamstress.wordpress.com, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’16.  I endeavour to wear at least one me-made item each day for the duration of May 2016, and (the more difficult part) take a photo every day and post round-ups on my blog.
